I made the big move from St. Paul, Minnesota to Abilene Texas for my first job as an occupational therapist. The two day drive was not the most thrilling experience in my life, and I was nervous about what to expect when I finally arrived in Abilene. However, I firmly believe it is one of the best things I have done in my life. My first job has been an overall positive experience. The other therapists I work with are very supportive and willing to help me out when needed. One thing that surprised me was the willingness of the other therapists to listen to my ideas and wanting to pick MY brain about treatments and techniques. I definitely value being part of a team and I hope other new grads out there find a supportive team atmosphere for their first jobs too! I have learned so much about the type of therapist I want to be, the population I want to work with, and the good and bad of living far away from family and friends.
